Celebrating 25 Years of Service: Sue Tattersall’s Journey at the University of Leeds
In the fast-paced world of academia, some individuals stand out for their dedication, passion, and longevity in their roles. Sue Tattersall is one such individual, celebrating an impressive 25 years at the University of Leeds. In this blog post, we dive into Sue’s journey, from her humble beginnings as a switchboard operator to her current role in the dynamic field of Conferences and Events.
A Journey Through Time:
Sue embarked on her University of Leeds adventure on 3rd January 1998, as a switchboard operator for Information System Services (now IT). Her early days were spent in the Parkinson Building where the main switchboard was located. Working part-time allowed her to balance her career and family life, a testament to the university’s commitment to its employees. Over the years, Sue’s role evolved, leading her to become the supervisor of the switchboard and main reception in 2004.
The introduction of the Centenary Gallery (now known as the Treasures Gallery) marked a significant shift in Sue’s career, as she delved into event management and catering. By 2005, she had transitioned to the Conferences and Events department, marking a new chapter in her university career.
The Quirky Charm of Early Days:
Coming from the private banking sector, Sue found the university environment quirky and laid back. The transition from a highly structured banking job to the more relaxed academic setting brought its own set of challenges. Old-school professors and a lack of urgency characterised the early days, providing a sharp contrast to her previous corporate experience.
Career Milestones:
Sue’s journey at the university is marked by several significant milestones. In 2014, she facilitated and managed Teach First, one of the largest events the university had ever undertaken. This annual event brought together thousands of graduates for a two-week program, showcasing Sue’s prowess in event coordination. Her proudest moment came through her involvement in charity work which started in 2015 until 2019, raising an impressive £94,507.07 for various local and national charities.
Evolution of the Events Industry:
Reflecting on her 25-year tenure, Sue highlights the evolution of the events industry. Technological advancements, particularly in IT and hybrid events, have reshaped the landscape. The impact of COVID-19 has spurred a renewed interest in in-person events, with international conferences facing challenges due to cost and sustainability concerns. Changes in dietary preferences and increased awareness of inclusivity have transformed event catering, ensuring a positive attendee experience.
The Unwavering Commitment:
When asked why she stayed at the University of Leeds for a quarter of a century, Sue’s response is simple—she never wanted to leave. The positive culture, support from management, and opportunities for personal and professional growth have kept her dedicated to the university. Sue’s journey is a testament to the institution’s commitment to its employees and its continuous efforts to evolve with the times.
Humorous Moments:
Amidst the years of hard work, Sue shares a light-hearted moment from her past. A frosty morning, an early start, and the discovery of odd shoes – one black and one blue. True to her resilient spirit, Sue embraced the mishap with a chuckle, finding humour even in the smallest of challenges.
As Sue Tattersall celebrates 25 years at the University of Leeds, her journey reflects not only personal achievements but also the university’s commitment to growth, inclusivity, and excellence in event management.
